Aboveground-trait variations in 11 (sub)alpine plants along a 1000-m elevation gradient in tropical Mexico

چکیده

With the aim to explore how plants acclimate elevation changes in understudied (sub)alpine tropics we tested two hypotheses along a 1000-m gradient Mexico: (H1) due severe increase abiotic constraints at higher elevations, functional traits of plant species will converge toward more resource conservation, and (H2) specific growth forms biogeographic origins present may influence interspecific trait variation gradient. We measured five aboveground traits: leaf area (SLA), dry-matter content (LDMC), thickness, height, 11 representing four forms: rosette, tussock grass, shrub tree soil microclimate. Microclimatic data revealed steep decrease water elevations. Across all individuals, SLA, height decreased with elevation, whereas LDMC thickness increased, which revealing adjustments towards conservation line H1. Consistently H2, that were characteristic tropical alpine regions (tussock grasses erect shrubs) less sensitive compared generalist such as forbs. In addition, within form “rosette” origin changed those Holarctic did not. Our indicate convergence improved be influenced partially by biogeographical species.

Harte Dead wood biomass and turnover time , measured by radiocarbon , along a subalpine elevation gradient

Dead wood biomass can be a substantial fraction of stored carbon in forest ecosystems, and coarse woody debris (CWD) decay rates may be sensitive to climate warming. We used an elevation gradient in Colorado Rocky Mountain subalpine forest to examine climate and species effects on dead wood biomass, and on CWD decay rate. Using a new radiocarbon approach, we determined that the turnover time of...

Abrupt Change in Forest Height along a Tropical Elevation Gradient Detected Using Airborne Lidar

Most research on vegetation in mountain ranges focuses on elevation gradients as climate gradients, but elevation gradients are also the result of geological processes that build and deconstruct mountains. Recent findings from the Luquillo Mountains, Puerto Rico, have raised questions about whether erosion rates that vary due to past tectonic events and are spatially patterned in relation to el...

Variation in leaf wettability traits along a tropical montane elevation gradient

Leaf wetting is often considered to have negative effects on plant function, such that wet environments may select for leaves with certain leaf surface, morphological, and architectural traits that reduce leaf wettability. However, there is growing recognition that leaf wetting can have positive effects. We measured variation in two traits, leaf drip tips and leaf water repellency, in a series ...

Climate Impacts on Soil Carbon Processes along an Elevation Gradient in the Tropical Luquillo Experimental Forest

Tropical forests play an important role in regulating the global climate and the carbon cycle. With the changing temperature and moisture along the elevation gradient, the Luquillo Experimental Forest in Northeastern Puerto Rico provides a natural approach to understand tropical forest ecosystems under climate change. In this study, we conducted a soil translocation experiment along an elevatio...
